Andrew Caddell Sets Track Record at Mid-Ohio

June 19, 2009

LEXINGTON, OH—19 June 09—Despite running in the high heat and humidity of an Ohio summer afternoon, Andrew Caddell shrugged off the greasy track conditions as he set a new Ford Racing Mustang Challenge track record at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with his fast lap time of 1:35.693-seconds on Friday. Caddell’s Raybestos Mustang will once again share the front row with Ted Anthony Jr., who is making his first racing appearance on the 2.258-mile natural terrain circuit.

Dan Aweida matched his career-best Mustang Challenge qualifying result with his run to third on the grid, as Mosport International Raceway winner Tony Buffomante took fourth. Mike McGovern will line the Jim Click Racing/Valvoline Mustang alongside Karl Thomson in the SPX/St. Jude’s Hospital Media Mustang.

“I couldn’t let you keep the record for more than a year!” joked Caddell as he was interviewed by Jamie Slone, who held the track record previously, for the newest MustangChallenge.com Inside Track episode. “It was a good first lap out, and I had a little bit better lap going the second time around but I caught some traffic right at the end. But it’s great to get the pole and I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow, rain or shine!”

The qualifying session capped off a busy day on track for Anthony Jr., who was also in action practicing for his Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner race on Sunday as he works to get as many racing laps in as he can in his first visit to Mid-Ohio.

“I’m feeling pretty good about the lap,” said Anthony. “We spent a lot of time making sure that I was comfortable on this track and learning my way around so we didn’t do too much tuning on the car. There might be a little bit more that we can find there, but starting on the front row of course isn’t bad! Even though the track was not really grippy, I was happy to come out with a strong lap time. The TC Motorsports boys have done a great job this weekend, and now I’m just looking forward to the race.”

Aweida was pleased with his run to third on the grid, particularly after he had his Mustang checked out at a local maintenance shop, showing off the production-line roots of the Mustang FR500S.

“This is great,” said Aweida, who will look to make another podium appearance after taking his first Mustang Challenge champagne shower in New Jersey. “I’m really happy, working with my crew chief Neil and the Caddells as well. For me, I work all week, so to come out here and be this quick against some of these guys is really great. We thought we had an alignment problem, so we took it to a shop down the road and everything is sorted out, so it was great to get that out of the way and now I’m ready to race on Saturday.”

Saturday’s 40-minute sprint event is slated for a 12:40 PM green flag.
