Anthony Takes Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Pole at Mazda Raceway Laguna SecaMay 16, 2009 (Monterey, CA) 16 May 2009— Ted Anthony Jr. scored yet another front row starting position with a fast lap time of 1:38.741-seconds to take pole position for round 6 of the 2009 Ford Racing Mustang Challenge championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday morning. Pratt Cole will line up alongside Anthony Jr. on the front row for Sunday’s 45-minute event as he looks to return to the Mustang Challenge podium. Andrew Hendricks posted the best qualifying result of his Mustang Challenge career with his run to third on the grid, with D. Rick Edwards slated to line up fourth. Jason Von Kluge, who made his debut podium appearance in the most recent round at New Jersey Motorsports Park, continued to show strength as he took fifth on the grid. Championship leader Andrew Caddell posted the second fastest time of the session, but will start from the rear of the field after having replaced two BFGoodrich Tires following contact with the curbing that was hard enough to require two new tires. Caddell and Anthony were running nose to tail at the time, giving Anthony a first-hand look at what happened. “He just hit the curbing at 6 way too hard and that was it,” said Anthony Jr, who had but one day of experience on the track some five years before the race weekend started. “You hate to have something like that happen, but sometimes the racing luck goes against you and sometimes it works for you, and obviously it worked against Andrew today. But I’ll admit that the first thing I thought about was the points! And from there, I just kept rolling and put a few quick laps in so it’s great to get another pole.” Caddell, who like Anthony Jr. is also racing a Jim Click Racing machine in the KONI Challenge race on Saturday afternoon, was disappointed with the session, but knows he’ll get a chance to make it up once the race starts. “I just turned in too early,” said the championship leader. “I knew the moment that I turned in that we were in trouble. We were able to get back out there, but looks like we’ll have to start from the back so we’ll see what we can do tomorrow! Starting alongside will be Cole, who has a long and distinguished racing resume, one that he started building well before Anthony was old enough to drive. “My car hasn’t been as strong this spring as it was last year, and I wasn’t sure if it was me or the car, but thanks to some help from Dean Martin at Rehagan Racing, the car is happy again and so am I!” said Cole, who was part of the podium ceremonies for the very first Mustang Challenge race ever held. “We’re back! And hopefully, if I can’t catch these youngsters, at least I can teach them some respect out there!” When asked what was the key that unlocked his best career starting position, Hendricks sounded a lot like a driver coach. “Patience! No question, that was key for me today,” said Henricks. “I watched a lot of video, and thought a lot last night about how to string the corners together for a good lap, and it worked out great this morning. I finally figured it out today, so I am really excited about this staring position and hopefully we can come home with a great finish as well.” Sunday’s 45-minute event will take the green flag at 10:00 AM local time.
