Ted Anthony Jr. Stays Hot with Mustang Challenge Pole At Barber Motorsports Park

April 18, 2009

Birmingham, AL—(18 April 2009) TC Motorsports pilot Ted Anthony, Jr. kept his hot hand going in Ford Racing Mustang Challenge competition on Saturday morning at Barber Motorsports Park as he took pole position for round 3 of the 2009 championship with a fast lap time of 1:38.246-seconds on the 2.38-mile circuit. The Mustang Challenge double-race weekend is being staged as part of the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Ford Mustang.

Anthony will have familiar company alongside on the front row as 2008 Mustang Challenge Champion Andrew Caddell will start second after posting his fast lap time of 1:38.391-seconds. D. Rick Edwards had a strong qualifying effort in the sister No 9 TC Motorsports entry, but will start the race from the back of the grid after a late-session incident forced him into a back up race machine.

Caddell struck the first blow in the 25-minute session to take the top speed on the charts, which he improved on his second flying lap, only to have Anthony Jr, nab the top spot shortly thereafter.

“I had to pass one car on my flying lap, but otherwise it as a clean, and mostly mistake-free lap,” said Anthony, who has won two of the last three Mustang Challenge races and picked up 5 championship points for his pole-winning effort. “I’m pretty happy with this pole and now I want to see about getting some footage of the start of last years race, as I know that Terry (Borcheller) got Andrew on the outside of turn one on the start, so I don’t want that to happen today!”

The session was another trademark outing for Caddell, who posted his fast laps right out of the box, returned to the pits to let the BFGoodrich engineers collect temps and pressures as he contemplated another run. But after keeping his eyes on the monitor, he decided to focus on making his move once the race starts.

“I was hoping to get the pole of course, but I’m ok with where we are because this track can get hot and folks can end up making mistakes, so I just wanted to save my tires for the race because we are going to need to get everything we can out of them for the full 45 minutes today,” said Caddell. “I hate to see that Rick (Edwards) had that problem at the end of the session—he’s a really nice guy and had a great run going in qualifying but I know that TC Motorsports will get him all set for the race.”

The last-corner incident, which saw the blue and red TC Motorports entry end up against the pit wall, was an unhappy wending to what had been a strong qualifying session for Edwards, who took 5th and 10th in the season-opening Homestead races.

“I just got loose, and then ended up in the grass, and then into the concrete,” said Edwards as he surveyed the damage. “I feel fine physically, but of course this is really disappointing. But I know that the TC Motorsports guys will help me make the most of this and be ready for the race later today.”
