SpeedWorks & Chip Scarlett Unveil the Racing to Save the Sharks Car Design

January 13, 2010

13 January 2010—SpeedWorks’ Mustang Challenge race team today unveiled the car livery for Chip Scarlett’s FR500s race car. The shark portrayed on both sides of the body is a young female Great White Shark. She is approximately 8 ft long and about one to two years old. Chip photographed the shark off Guadalupe Island, Mexico in August 2005. Great Whites are attracted to Guadalupe in the late summer and early fall by the presence of schools of tuna and sea lions - both their natural food source. Great White Sharks reproduce slowly, with only a few pups to a litter.

As such, they are threatened by longline fishing, pollution and loss of habitat. Australia, South Africa and the United States have designated Great Whites as an endangered, protected species. To find out more about this endangered species, log on to http://www.sharksavers.org. Chip and his wife, Susan, plan to make materials available at each Mustang Challenge race explaining the key role sharks play in the health of the oceans, and their current plight at the hands of illegal shark finning operations. They are also creating their own web site, which will be part of the car livery, http://www.racingtosavesharks.com.
